Guided visit of the copper mine

1.5 km away from Stolzembourg are the remains of the former copper mine. For more than 500 years, the copper-bearing veins of the "Klangbaach" have attracted several investors.

In recent years, a part of the underground galleries has been made accessible to the interested public

The underground galleries are open starting Easter until the end of October. The visit with a guide of the association "Guides des Ardennes" includes:

1. The museum with information on the geology of the region, history of the mine, the different mining periods.

2. The geological trail with 10 display boards.

3. The underground galleries.

Duration : 2-3 hours. Meeting Point : Museum 5A, rue Principale Stolzembourg

You get to hike a bit, a history lesson and visit the mine at the same time. The mine part is a bit challenging for people who don't do sports at all but it is still very feasible if you are willing to experience something new. You get to walk in the water on a slippery path but there is a handrail to prevent you from tripping. The guide makes you feel as comfortable as possible and provides you with all the details about security you need to know so despite the unusual circumstances, it is not stressful.

Unique visit to a flooded copper mine

We had a wonderful visit of the copper mine, totally unique and very memorable. There is a short video in whatever language the group speaks (French, German, Luxembourgish, English) followed by a ~20 minute walk with the guide to the mine itself, passing some lovely countryside and a few other explanations, and then you suit up and then go in to the flooded mine. The mine visit is a roughly 45 minute tour of the base level of the mine, then you unsuit and walk back - so all in all about an hour and a half to two hours. The mine itself is radically different from the coal mines in southern Luxembourg, and if you like caves or mines you'll appreciate it. We had a great time and the guide we had (whose name I can't remember) was highly interactive and great to listen to - although it was only myself and my wife, so we had a private tour! She spoke German/Luxembourgish/French so we did the tour in French; if you don't speak French or German maybe you can ask in advance to make sure you can get paired with an English-speaking guide. Since the tours are usually only once a week, you might have to arrange it well in advance. I imagine 100% of the guides speak French and German though since they are all (or almost all?) Luxembourgers from the area.

Would absolutely recommend this as a must visit in Luxembourg. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and nice. The first part of the visit has higher water levels which needs to be noted for visitors with small children. As the boots provided are not high enough. Great visit altogether.

Was a really cool experience, first you will walk a path to the mine in a green environment. The audio guide is there for different languages, but the guide also speaks good german and france. Inside the mine it's sometimes difficult to hear the guide, because of the narrow mine and the other people walking through water. But after all we had a really nice experience!
