In earlier times, glass was a sought-after luxury item that only the rich and noble could afford. From the 15th century onwards, the wealthy citizen also claimed glassware and the demand increased constantly. Because of the high demand for wood (1 kg of glass = 1 cubic metre of wood), the glassworks were located in the forests. A typical feature of forest glass is its greenish colour, which comes from the iron oxide contained in the quartz sand. Although forest glass was mostly utility glass, it is characterised by a variety of shapes and decorations.
