Certain details appear again and again in Diekirch. The donkey is one of them. Once used for heavy work in the vineyards of the Härebierg, it gradually became the town’s symbol.

Today, donkeys are encountered throughout the town: as sculptures in the streets, at the Ieselsbuer fountain and, in a detail that often surprises visitors, at the top of Saint Lawrence’s Church, where a donkey replaces the traditional cockerel.

Diekirch is easy to explore with children. The Diekirch History Museum regularly offers workshops and activities adapted to younger visitors. A large playground awaits at the Aal Schwämm site, which also features a family-friendly restaurant.

Depending on the season, the afternoon can be spent tackling the Donkey Challenge, swimming at the pool or strolling along the Sûre. The riverside park is ideal for a break or a picnic, with footbridges crossing the water. It naturally extends into the In Bedingen Nature Discovery Park, home to donkeys and other animals.

To end the day, a visit to the Scala Cinema is a popular choice. Housed in a former industrial building, it combines five screens with a particular charm. Easy to reach thanks to its large car park and immediate proximity to the railway station, it also has its own bar and restaurant.

For a more dynamic experience, the morning can be spent hiking on the Éislek Pad Diekirch, with its elevated sections and open views over the valley.

At lunchtime, Beim Louis offers Luxembourgish specialities alongside street food, particularly welcome after a morning outdoors.

In the afternoon, the National Conservatory of Historic Vehicles provides a change of scenery and an interesting contrast to the natural surroundings.

Before leaving, a stop at Patrick’s Patt is almost a ritual. Located opposite the school, this café was once the meeting place for pupils and students. Reopened in 2025, it now offers a wide drinks selection and simple, tasty meals.
