Living to the rhythm of traditions and its pedestrian zone Discover Diekirch

In Diekirch, urban life meets nature along the banks of the Sûre. Museums, parks and events shape daily life in a town that feels both welcoming and full of character.

At first glance, Diekirch appears calm and compact. But spending a little time here quickly reveals its many layers: a history reaching back to Roman times, a strong sense of local life rooted in tradition, an unexpected number of museums, and green landscapes that begin just beyond the last houses.

Diekirch - Everyday life in Éislek

Located in the north of Luxembourg, in the heart of the Éislek region, Diekirch has just over 7,000 inhabitants. The town stretches along the River Sûre and is framed by the Haardt and Goldknapp hills. Together with Ettelbruck, it forms the core of the Nordstad, a developing urban area that concentrates shops, cultural venues, schools and infrastructure.

The town centre is compact and easy to explore. The pedestrian zone, the first of its kind in Luxembourg, is more than a shopping street. It is a place to cross paths, meet people and pause on a terrace without planning ahead. Events and traditions regularly punctuate the year, giving Diekirch a lively but never hectic rhythm.

The donkeys of Diekirch

Certain details appear again and again in Diekirch. The donkey is one of them. Once used for heavy work in the vineyards of the Härebierg, it gradually became the town’s symbol.

Today, donkeys are encountered throughout the town: as sculptures in the streets, at the Ieselsbuer fountain and, in a detail that often surprises visitors, at the top of Saint Lawrence’s Church, where a donkey replaces the traditional cockerel.

Museums and memory

Diekirch’s history is long and layered. Traces of the Roman period can still be seen, particularly at the Diekirch History Museum, where an impressive mosaic recalls the town’s ancient origins. The museum presents the development of Diekirch in a clear and accessible way.

Another key site is the National Military History Museum. The Battle of the Bulge deeply affected Diekirch, and the museum offers a very tangible account of this period through life-sized dioramas, objects and vehicles. Even visitors familiar with the topic often leave with a renewed perspective.

Diekirch is also closely linked to brewing. Beer is still produced locally, and the Brewery History Museum traces more than a century of expertise through posters, objects and stories tied to the brand.

Finally, the National Conservatory of Historic Vehicles brings a different angle to the cultural offer. Its temporary exhibitions attract both enthusiasts and curious visitors, highlighting various aspects of automotive history.

Diekirch and its green surroundings

One of Diekirch’s most striking features is how quickly the town gives way to nature. Within minutes, it is possible to reach the riverbanks, a forest path or a trail climbing above the valley. The municipal park along the Sûre is ideal for a short break surrounded by greenery.

The Éislek Pad Diekirch crosses varied landscapes and offers fine views over the town and the valley. Shorter local routes allow for relaxed walks without straying far from the urban area.

The Adrien Ries trail, which links several municipalities of the Nordstad in stages, also passes through Diekirch. It clearly shows how closely nature and everyday life are connected here, with no sharp divide between town and countryside.

Day trips and themed visits

Diekirch with the family

Diekirch is easy to explore with children. The Diekirch History Museum regularly offers workshops and activities adapted to younger visitors. A large playground awaits at the Aal Schwämm site, which also features a family-friendly restaurant.

Depending on the season, the afternoon can be spent tackling the Donkey Challenge, swimming at the pool or strolling along the Sûre. The riverside park is ideal for a break or a picnic, with footbridges crossing the water. It naturally extends into the In Bedingen Nature Discovery Park, home to donkeys and other animals.

To end the day, a visit to the Scala Cinema is a popular choice. Housed in a former industrial building, it combines five screens with a particular charm. Easy to reach thanks to its large car park and immediate proximity to the railway station, it also has its own bar and restaurant.

Diekirch differently – Creativity, flavours and local addresses

This route appeals to those who like discovering a town through everyday life, meeting places and lesser-known spots. It is a day without a tight schedule, leaving room to stroll, taste and chat.

The morning starts at the Diekirch market, held every third Wednesday of the month. Fresh, seasonal produce fills the stalls, and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.

Just a few steps away, Café N°12 invites visitors to linger over brunch. Everything is homemade, with particular attention to vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. The café is appreciated both for its food and its cosy, central setting.

The afternoon focuses on creativity at Bitz a Kaffihaus. Part haberdashery, part café and part restaurant, this hybrid space encourages exchange and experimentation. Workshops such as tufting are regularly organised and are available for groups of four or more.

The day ends with shopping in Diekirch’s small boutiques. Librairie Zimmer, a long-established local institution, has been part of the town’s story for decades and remains a favourite stop for book lovers.

For a more urban contrast, a short detour to Ingeldorf leads to Asport / Scoop86, known for its exclusive sneaker collections and popular streetwear selection.

A day that reveals another side of Diekirch: creative, contemporary and firmly rooted in local life.
