Located in the eastern part of the Éislek region, Vianden is one of Luxembourg’s best-known towns. 

High above the river Our, Vianden Castle dominates the landscape as the symbol of the town, attracting visitors from around the world. But Vianden has much more to offer. For centuries, Vianden has inspired artists and writers. Culture enthusiasts will enjoy the blend of history, literature and contemporary art – all tied together by the legacy of Victor Hugo. 

9:00 – Guided City Tour & Castle Visit
A guided walk through the old town brings Vianden’s history to life with anecdotes and hidden details. Afterwards, visit the castle for a deeper look at its architecture and restoration. 

Those seeking a more active morning can hike Éislek Pad Vianden (12 km), which includes the Victor Hugo viewpoint, famously admired by the French poet. 

12:00 – Lunch at Restaurant Victor Hugo
Named after Vianden’s most famous guest, this restaurant combines regional cuisine with a touch of literary flair. 

13:00 – Visit the Victor Hugo House
Directly opposite, the museum showcases manuscripts, sketches and personal items, illustrating the author’s life in Vianden. 

17:00 – Art & Evening Stroll
A walk through the town’s streets leads to the Veiner Konschtgalerie, exhibiting works by local artists. End your day at the Ancien Cinéma, a cultural café with retro charm.

A day trip to Vianden offers variety and adventure for the whole family. Here, medieval charm meets modern leisure activities that combine play, discovery and relaxation. 

10:00 – Castle Visit & Chairlift Ride
In the morning, the castle is still calm, perfect for families. Children can explore knights’ armours, grand halls and narrow stairways. For a bit of thrill, take the chairlift back down to the valley (April–October) and enjoy the panoramic views.

12:00 – Lunch at Restaurant Petry
Back in the centre, Restaurant Petry welcomes families right next to the largest playground in town. Pizzas, pasta and kid-friendly classics make it the ideal lunch stop. 

14:00 – Minigolf or Outdoor Pool
In the afternoon, enjoy a round of minigolf or cool off at the Vianden outdoor swimming pool, where you can swim laps with a castle view. 

17:00 – Sweet Treat at Croissant d’Or
Finish the day at Vianden’s only bakery, Croissant d’Or, with homemade pastries, cakes and regional specialities. 

Vianden Compact – History, Views and Flavour

itinerary captures the town’s essence in a short visit. 

10:00 – Walk along the City Walls
Trail VI 2 (6 km, approx. 2 h) leads to the Fändelchen viewpoint, overlooking the town, then follows the old fortifications and returns to the centre, a journey through medieval times. 

12:00 – Chairlift & Lunch at the Top
Luxembourg’s only chairlift takes visitors up to 440 m, with stunning views along the way. At the summit, a restaurant serves hearty dishes and snacks with a panoramic backdrop.

Hiking in Vianden

Just a few steps from the town centre, visitors can immerse themselves in nature, walking through forests, following the Our river or enjoying breathtaking views of the medieval castle.
Starting points are located near the Tourist Info in the town centre and by the cemetery. Several trails of varying lengths and difficulties lead directly into the surrounding landscape.

Events in Vianden

Among Vianden’s cultural highlights is the Nut Market, held every year on the second Sunday of October – a celebration of local produce and traditions. 
Also not to miss: the MegaHike, a sporting event that attracts hiking enthusiasts from near and far. 
And of course, the Medieval Festival at Vianden Castle, where knights, musicians and craftsmen bring the Middle Ages back to life.
