Urspelt, a discreet base

Urspelt is a small village, with no lively centre or major sights. Houses line just a handful of streets, traffic is rare and the atmosphere remains calm throughout the day.
What draws visitors here is peace, comfort and a sense of retreat. This is found at Château d’Urspelt, set slightly apart in carefully maintained surroundings. The hotel is well known for the quality of its hospitality, its cuisine and its wellness facilities. Many guests choose Urspelt for exactly this reason: enjoying a high level of comfort while staying close to the main attractions of Éislek.

Day trips from Urspelt

Urspelt works as a base camp. During the day, the region opens up. In the evening, everything slows down again, whether in the garden, the spa or the restaurant.

Active excursion – Walk, see, breathe

This excursion suits those who enjoy spending time outdoors and moving through changing landscapes. Depending on personal preference, three walks of different difficulty levels can be chosen for the morning.

In Clervaux, the Éislek Pad – around 14 km and roughly four hours on foot – first crosses the town, runs past the castle, passes near the Church Saints-Côme-et-Damien and Saint Maurice Abbey, before gradually leading into the forest. The transition between heritage and nature happens naturally. Buildings fall behind, impressions linger, and the path takes over. Back in Clervaux, several restaurants offer a welcome break to recharge.

For a gentler option closely linked to water, the Autopédestre Roder walking trail is an excellent alternative. The route follows the valley, passing through woodland and open clearings, and leads to a striking viewpoint overlooking a bend in the River Our. The area is quiet, almost secluded. The remains of an ancient fortification are a reminder that this spot held strategic importance long before our time. Nearby, the restaurant Am'Our is a convenient place for lunch.

Those preferring a shorter loop can opt for the KI 1 trail in Enscherange, a walk of about an hour. It ends ideally at Rackésmillen, the oldest mill still operating in the country, where simple and generous Luxembourgish dishes are served in a warm setting.

The afternoon can continue in Clervaux: exploring the town, visiting The Family of Man exhibition, or strolling through the Cité de l’Image.
At the end of the day, returning to Urspelt feels particularly rewarding.

Cultural excursion – Clervaux, in tune with images

A full day in Clervaux, less than ten minutes from Urspelt, dedicated to taking time to observe, discover and understand the town.

The morning begins with an unhurried walk through the streets. Distances are short, viewpoints frequent, and the outdoor photographic installations already hint at the town’s cultural identity.

At midday, lunch at Les Écuries du Parc, located in the former castle stables, fits naturally into the day. The setting reflects the site’s past while maintaining a contemporary atmosphere.

The afternoon is devoted to a guided visit of The Family of Man. The tour goes beyond simply viewing the photographs. Images are placed in their historical, social and cultural context, offering a deeper understanding of why this exhibition, curated by Edward Steichen, is today listed as part of UNESCO’s world documentary heritage.

By the end of the day, returning to Urspelt marks a clear shift in pace. Time slows again, leaving room for relaxation.

Iconic excursion – Vianden, then back to tranquillity

This excursion combines heritage discovery with relaxation, creating a strong contrast between daytime activity and the evening calm.

Vianden is easily reached by car from Urspelt. The visit begins with a short walk along the VI 1 trail, which follows the old ramparts and offers a different view of the town. The walk starts at the tourist office.

The historic centre then invites a break in one of the many typical local restaurants.

In the afternoon, the route leads up to the castle. This can be done on foot or by taking the country’s only chairlift, which offers fine views over the valley. Vianden Castle impresses both by its scale and its state of preservation, and it regularly features among the most beautiful medieval castles in the world.

Returning to Urspelt in the evening allows the day to end on a calmer note: spa, dinner and a peaceful night’s sleep.
