Educational Hikes in Éislek

Discover Nature on Themed Trails and Learning Paths

Éislek, in northern Luxembourg, is renowned for its diverse landscapes, rich biodiversity, and impressive variety of habitats. Different ecosystems converge here, providing a home for countless animal and plant species. To help preserve these unique biotopes, several nature reserves have been established.

Specially selected hiking trails lead directly through these protected areas, making the region’s natural treasures accessible to visitors. Many of the routes are equipped with information panels that explain conservation efforts and highlight the importance of the surrounding habitats.

This guide introduces some of the most rewarding trails for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts.

Across Wooden Walkways Through Wet Meadows

The Cornelysmillen Trail in Troisvierges

This 9 km nature trail begins at Troisvierges railway station and leads into the Cornelysmillen nature reserve. The area is characterised by species-rich wet meadows, now carefully maintained by conservation organisations. Former fishponds have been restored and today provide vital habitats for numerous bird species.

Part of the trail runs along narrow wooden walkways, taking visitors deep into the wetlands where the unique flora and fauna can be experienced up close. Along the way, information panels explain the various habitats, while secluded benches invite hikers to pause and observe nature. Conveniently located by the train station, the trail is easy to reach without a car.

Another focus is on water management, wastewater treatment, and the protection of drinking water – especially in the catchment area of the Upper Sûre Lake, the heart of the Upper Sûre Nature Park.

The trail starts in the village of Baschleiden.

Note: Parts of the route cross grazing land. Please remain on the marked paths, avoid disturbing the animals, and keep dogs on a lead.

Into the Trëtterbach Valley

The Life Éislek Trail

This easy 5 km circular route leads from the Asselborn Mill through the Trëtterbach valley to Léresmillen. Information panels along the way explain the restoration measures carried out in this area.

A special feature is the wooden walkway that follows the Trëtterbach stream. Here, a 300-metre-long straightened section of the stream has been returned to its natural course, creating new habitats for wildlife and providing natural flood protection. This part of the trail is designated as a bird reserve.

The walk begins at the Asselborn Mill, which also offers a cosy place to stop for refreshments. Historically, this was once an important postal route.

The Via Botanica

A Highlight in Every Season

The Via Botanica in Lellingen winds through one of Luxembourg’s most species-rich and scenic nature reserves. The trail leads through a varied landscape of gorse-covered hillsides, oak and hornbeam forests, and meadows.

In spring, the path is particularly enchanting as thousands of daffodils come into bloom. But it is equally rewarding in other seasons: refreshing shade in summer, vibrant colours in autumn, and peaceful woodland walks in winter.

Between Coppice Woods and Rocky Ridges

The Kautenbach Nature Trail

With around 220 metres of elevation over 6.5 km, this is a moderately challenging hike. Starting in Kautenbach, the route follows the River Wiltz through characteristic oak coppice woods once used for bark harvesting in the leather industry, an important economic sector in Wiltz and the wider region.

The trail then climbs to Hockslee, offering panoramic views, before continuing to the Ueweschleed, a narrow rocky ridge where sure-footedness is essential. Returning via dry grasslands, the route offers a rich mix of landscapes.

Information panels explain local flora, habitats, and their past and present uses.
