The Battle of the Bulge

The Battle of the Bulge is the name given to the military operations that took place in the Ardennes region during the winter of 1944/5. It began on 16th December 1944 with a surprise German attack later known as the “Von Rundstedt Offensive”.

The end came in late January 1945 when the Germans were forced beyond their starting point.

Clervaux Castle | Museum of the Battle of the Bulge | The Family of Man

Clervaux: Clervaux castle was destroyed by fire on 19th December 1944. It was restored and has become a symbol of reconstruction with respect for traditional architectural values.

Visit to the Battle of the Bulge Museum in Clervaux castle (30 minute duration, free access with the Luxembourg Card).

“The Family of Man” exhibition: a message for peace assembled by Edward Steichen. This exhibition is part of UNESCO’s Memory of the World programme (45 minute duration, free access with the Luxembourg Card).

National Military History Museum | Général Georges S. Patton (statue and museum)

Visit of the National Military History Museum

Battle of the Bulge scenes are represented with life-size models which reflect the personal experiences of civilians and soldiers around Diekirch. This includes an exhibition of military material, archive photos and more. The history of the Luxembourgish army since 1940 is also featured in another section of the museum.

Monument de la grève | Musée de la brasserie et de la tannerie | Sentier pédestre du Souvenir

Wiltz - Cité des Martyrs

La décision de l’enrôlement de force entraînait la grève générale au Luxembourg. C’est à Wiltz que débuta le 31 août 1942 le mouvement de résistance à l’oppresseur nazi. Déclenchée à la fabrique de cuir Ideal, la grève regagna bientôt la ville entière et bon nombre d’autres localités du pays. Cet héroïsme sous l’occupation allemande de 1940 à 1945 a valu à la ville le titre de "Cité Martyre".

  • Monument de la grève avec vue panoramique sur la ville (durée 15 minutes)
  • Section "cité des martyrs" au Musée de la brasserie et de la tannerie, château de Wiltz. (durée 30 minutes) entrée gratuite avec la Luxembourg Card.

Route Wiltz - Schumanns Eck : 5 km

  • Schumans Eck : le Sentier pédestre du Souvenir, d'une longueur de 2,8 km, permet aux visiteurs de découvrir les alentours du champ de bataille "Schumans Eck" en suivant les traces des trous de fusiliers ("foxholes") où de nombreux soldats américains et allemands ont combattu et trouvé la mort pendant le "Bataille des Ardennes 1944-45".
