Adventure on the Our: discover, marvel and get involved
Pull on your wellies, step into the river, discover small creatures and learn how freshwater mussels are protected: a nature experience for curious families with children.
What actually lives beneath the surface of the water? And why do some river animals need special protection today? This activity is designed for families with children and offers a hands-on way to explore the Our from a fresh perspective.
Depending on the weather and the group, the experience begins directly in the river. Wearing their own wellies – or barefoot in warm, dry conditions – children explore the water together and discover small aquatic creatures such as insect larvae or freshwater shrimp. The animals are handled with care and later observed more closely at the water experience centre, using magnifying glasses or microscopes. There is plenty of time to look closely, ask questions and simply be amazed.
Another part of the activity leads to the freshwater mussel breeding station at Kalborn Mill. Here, children learn why freshwater mussels have become increasingly rare and what is being done to protect them. Step by step, they follow how tiny larvae develop into young mussels before being returned to their natural habitats.
The experience combines movement, discovery and learning in a playful, accessible way. Children connect directly with nature and come away with a clearer understanding of why clean rivers and healthy ecosystems matter.
