The Upper Sûre Lake and Lake Attersee: Two Jewels in Protected Nature

LEADER Zeitreise

Nestled in the heart of the Éislek region in Luxembourg and the Attersee-Attergau region in Austria, two stunning lakes not only captivate with their scenic beauty but also play crucial roles in ecology and tourism. The Upper Sûre Lake and Lake Attersee attract nature enthusiasts and adventurers while providing vital habitats for numerous animal and plant species.

Unique Natural Treasures with Drinking Water Quality

Both the Upper Sûre Lake and Lake Attersee hold exceptional ecological significance. They supply drinking water to their respective regions, with the Upper Sûre Lake being Luxembourg’s largest drinking water reservoir. The crystal-clear water of Lake Attersee, reaching depths of up to 20 meters, is also of drinking water quality and has earned its reputation as the ‘Caribbean of the Alps.’ This purity is crucial not only for local populations but also for the diverse wildlife inhabiting and surrounding the lakes.

Historical Depth and Modern Significance

The Upper Sûre Lake was created by dam construction in 1957 and now serves as the centrepiece of the Upper Sûre Nature Park. In contrast, Lake Attersee boasts a history that spans several millennia. Formed after glaciers melted at the end of the Ice Age, it has been a site of human settlement for over 6.000 years, with these historical remnants now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This rich history adds a unique aura to Lake Attersee, while the Upper Sûre Lake represents modern water resource management.

Leisure Experiences for All Ages

Both lakes offer a diverse array of recreational activities. Lake Attersee entices with its swimming spots, sailing opportunities, and diving experiences in its turquoise waters. Meanwhile, the Upper Sûre Lake is perfect for swimming, hiking, and other outdoor activities. Despite their distinct histories, both lakes provide a wide range of leisure options enjoyed by both tourists and locals.

Myths and Legends

The myths surrounding these lakes add to their allure. Around Lake Attersee, the legend of the mermaid Adhara, who once brought wealth but was driven away by people, persists. It is said that her spirit still imparts a special glow to the water.

Shared Challenges and Responsibilities

Despite their differences, the Upper Sûre Lake and Lake Attersee face similar challenges. Both regions strive to balance tourism, nature conservation, and economic use. Protecting these valuable ecosystems and promoting sustainable recreational activities are central to their efforts.
