Potato harvest by tractor and covered wagon: “Grompere rafen” in Binsfeld

In September and October, it’s potato harvest time in the fields around Binsfeld. Every year, the team at the Musée Rural ‘A Schiewesch’ invites visitors to lend a hand. It all starts with a ride on the covered wagon: the old tractor pulls the group out into the field, where the potatoes are dug up using traditional tools, just as has been the custom here for generations. 

Afterwards, it’s time to lend a hand. The dug-up potatoes are gathered together and filled into sacks. This activity demonstrates just how much manual labour used to go into a single harvest. At the end, every participant is allowed to fill a bag with potatoes to take home. 

Back at the museum grounds, a well-deserved treat awaits: ‘Gromperekichelcher’, the traditional Luxembourgish potato pancakes, freshly prepared and enjoyed together. 

Anyone who wishes can then visit the museum itself for an admission fee, with its historical exhibition rooms showcasing rural life from centuries past.

• Available only seasonally: early September to mid-October 
• Booking is required, ideally one week in advance. Last-minute enquiries are possible and will be confirmed subject to availability 
• Sturdy footwear and weatherproof clothing are recommended, as the activity takes place in the field 
• Goes ahead even in the rain 
• Not wheelchair accessible 
• Recommended for children aged 4 and over. 
• Museum admission not included 
• Groups of more than 10 people are possible on request
