Tavigny Castle
Where? B-6662 Tavigny
This privately owned and very well renovated castle was the strategic location for the Canal works. Engineers, architects and other masterminds stayed here during all the preparations for the construction work.
Tavigny Castle was the headquarters of the Société du Luxembourg from 1827 to 1832. It was here that the managing director, Mr Sainctelette, resided, as well as, most likely, the engineers and employees of the Société du Luxembourg. Remy de Puydt must have stayed there frequently.
All that remains of the original feudal castle is a 10-metre-square tower with walls 2 metres thick.
The date of construction of the tower is unknown (13th century?). The tower probably stood alone, as the masonry stones are not interlocked with the adjacent walls. The construction therefore seems to date from the era of refuge towers. A square enclosure flanked by four towers, two of which still remain, was added later. Subsequently, a L-shaped building connected the square tower to a corner tower. This part of the building still has a Gothic fireplace.
